When The Ocean Oaracle catches up with the four guys from Lessons From a Boat, they’re in La Gomera making the final preparations for departure. With jobs ranging from teaching to physiotherapy, and with nine kids between them aged between 15 and 24, they definitely tick the box of plucky have-a-go ocean rowing heroes.

Physio and CEO, Jason Howard, 59, is doing this to raise awareness for Type 1 Diabetes, which his son Jakey has. CEO Dan Dicker, 51, wants to inspire the next generation to be more resilient, while Jonathan Wilburn, 51, and Steven Potter, 62, are teachers who want to use this incredible opportunity to provide “Lessons From a Boat”.

I’m impressed by the professionalism and focus they’ve dedicated to their campaign – not least their approach to nutrition. Admittedly, this is different to The Mothership’s run up to departure, which was mainly fuelled by alcohol and Haribo.

Here, the crew explains their motivation for doing the race and reveals which billionaire is giving their crossing a boost – and the secret tech that may help them row faster…
